South Pacific Broadway- A Great Musical

South pacific is considered to be one of the greatest musicals of all time on Broadway. South Pacific Broadway is a spectacular show which has always mesmerized its audiences with its brilliant performances and joyous music.

South Pacific is the only musical ever to have won all four Tony Awards for acting. This musical was selected for nine Tony Awards and it won all of them.

The musical opened on Broadway in 1949, at the Majestic Theatre, and then it moved to the Broadway Theatre in 1953. The show was produced by Rodgers and Hammerstein in alliance with Leland Hayward and Joshua Logan. Also, Joshua Logan directed this amazing musical. The original cast of the show was Mary Martin as the heroine and an opera star Ezio Pinza, who played the role of a French plantation proprietor.

The story of South Pacific show is based on two short stories from a book by James A. Michener. His book Tales of the South Pacific was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1948. And the musical was itself accoladed with the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950.

The story outline is very strong. It shows the period of World War II. And during that time the US army has stationed a base on a South Pacific island. Shortly, a young nurse from Arkansas named Nellie Forbush, falls in love with a middle-aged French plantation proprietor, Emile de Becque.

The two faced troubled romance as Nellie gradually finds out the details of de Becque's past. In the meantime, Lieutenant Cable turns up to become the chief a mission to create a spy station on a Japanese-held island. Bloody Mary, the island souvenir trader, tries to set Cable up with her daughter, Liat. Subsequently Cable says no to marry the girl. This makes Bloody Mary furious and she drags her daughter away so as to find her a new admirer. Soon after, Cable must begin his dangerous mission. After considerable thought and difficulty, de Becque agrees to become Cable's guide for that dangerous secret mission. Eventually, Cable dies but de Becque survives and lives a happy and blissful life with Nellie.

South Pacific show features music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. A number of its songs, such as A Wonderful Guy, Bali Ha'i, Younger than springtime, and Some Enchanted Evening, have become widely famous around the world.
